It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. We’re working toward our goal of providing 100% clean energy by 2045, and our work plays a critical role in our customers’ lives and in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon.<br><br>It is our goal to hire the best qualified Apprentice Station Technicians available. To meet this objective, IPC will hire Apprentices from an internal pool of Pre-Apprentices. The Pre-Apprentices selected for hire will have demonstrated the technical and behavioral competencies necessary to be a productive and successful Substation Technician at IPC.<br><br>Our Substation Construction Crews are divided into 6 disciplines – Structural, Control, Mobile Apparatus, Combo, Battery Technicians, and Electrical Shop Technicians:<br><br>Structural – They are responsible for installing substation and power plant grids, foundations, structures, breakers, transformers, buss, high and low voltage cables, and other apparatus.<br><br>Control – They are responsible for installing, commissioning, and troubleshooting substation and power plant control systems. These include system monitoring equipment, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) remote terminal units (RTUs), remedial action schemes (RAS), and protective relay, control, and communication systems.<br><br>Mobile Apparatus – They are responsible for hauling, operating, maintaining, testing, installing, and repairing IPC’s fleet of mobile apparatus. They assemble, disassemble, and move all new and used transformers in IPC’s system.<br><br>Combo – This crew is generally made up of both Structural and Control Technicians.<br><br>Electrical Shop Technicians – They are responsible for the assembly and testing of substation protection, communication, and control systems and supporting equipment. These systems include protective relaying, control, SCADA, metering, digital fault and sequence of event recorders and remote terminal unit (RTU) configurations.<br><br>Battery Technicians – They work in a team and/or individual environment to install and test batteries, load centers, chargers, racks, and other associated equipment at substations, communication sites, and power plants. They perform maintenance and testing of new and existing batteries in the system.<br><br>What does a Pre-Apprentice Substation Technician do for us?<br><br>This is a training position, designed to prepare future Station Technicians Apprentices and Journeymen for work in a crew-based environment. These individuals will learn how to install Station related structural, control, and mobile apparatus equipment and assemblies. Under direct supervision, they will assist the Station Technicians to install and assemble substations related structural assemblies, control systems, and power transformers. They complete assigned tasks, including all aspects of the Station Construction given adequate direction and oversight. Pre-Apprentices must demonstrate the aptitude to be considered for a Station Technician Apprentice position. Aptitude will be demonstrated through on-the-job evaluations, a skills assessment, and performance evaluations. If aptitude is not sufficiently demonstrated, termination of employment may occur. This position requires lifting up to 170 lbs., carrying up to 120 lbs., pushing up to 110 lbs., and pulling up to 180 lbs. Crouching, bending/stooping, and crawling is required occasionally and sometimes in confined spaces. Kneeling is required frequently. Climbing of 24-foot ladders and onto transformers/equipment with fall restraint gear is performed occasionally as well as work from an elevated lift with sustained reaching. Reaching up to shoulder level is performed occasionally and shoulder level/above/overhead occasionally with/without a loaded hot stick Standing/walking is performed frequently and sitting/driving is required up to 7 hours in duration to access job sites. Job sometimes requires working outdoors in adverse weather conditions. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation for the DOT medical certificate. If unsuccessful in obtaining an Apprentice position within 18 months of hire, they will be released from employment.<br><br>This position is a member of the Stations Construction department and may be assigned to work on a Mobile Apparatus Crew, Station Structural Crew, Station Control Crew, Combo Crew (that does both Control wiring and Structural work in substations), Battery Crew or the Electrical Shop. The crew this position is assigned to may change at any time depending on business need.<br><br>This position requires extensive travel across Idaho Power’s service area. The work schedule for this position may change week to week. Typical work schedule includes four 10-hour days, and eight 10-hour days working back-to-back weeks. Each workday may be an out-of-town, overnight stay.
